York's Independent Living and Assessment Centre

Our Independent Living and Assessment Centre (ILAC) is a new facility that provides face-to-face advice to enable disabled or elderly people to carry on living independently in their home.

ILAC is a specially adapted flat containing aids and equipment in the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom that customers and their carers can trial with the help of occupational therapy staff.

Assessments at the centre are by appointment only. Please contact the Initial assessment and Safeguarding Team.

What to expect:

  • You may be sent a form asking for information on you, your home and your furniture. Please fill it out and return it to us.
  • An appointment will be made for an assessment at the centre with our trained staff, to determine what is most appropriate to assist you.
  • They will also offer you information and independent advice about the equipment on display.
  • Try the equipment and watch demonstrations in everyday settings such as kitchen, bedroom or bathroom.
  • We may supply you with equipment you can collect, or we may arrange for it to be delivered to you.
  • On some occasions it may be necessary to also visit you at home where a more detailed assessment is required.
  • Staff will also be able to inform you about other services offered by the Local Authority.
