Equipment for people with a disability

If you are disabled, or care for somebody who is, there are several ways you can access equipment to assist with everyday tasks.

For help with difficulties such as:

  • walking
  • bathing
  • moving and handling
  • toileting

we have an online self-assessment tool you can find at www.equip-yourself-york.org.uk.

This offers advice, information and solutions which may include the loan of equipment to help maintain your independence.

Equipment and information for people with a sight or hearing impairment is available at the following centres to trial and buy:

Have your needs assessed by a member of our team

You can apply if you:

  • have a health problem or disability or
  • are a carer and live in the area covered by the council

How to apply

You need an assessment before we can provide you with equipment. We will discuss your situation with you and your carer to try to find a solution.

We aim to provide you with equipment within seven working days, except when providing equipment that requires a special order.

To request an assessment please contact us. Someone else can make a request for you.

Cost

Equipment is provided free of charge.

Returning the equipment

Equipment is the property of the council or the Selby and York Primary Care Trust.

You can return the equipment to our loan store (opening hours 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday) or in some instances (for example large items) we can arrange to collect it.

If you have a problem with equipment or wish to arrange a collection or return, tel: (01904) 553058 or 553059.
