City Of York Council

York students

Welcome to York!  We hope you are enjoying living and studying in this great city, and become a good neighbour within the community.

Popular student areas can be vibrant places to live, where residents live happily with their student neighbours.  It is therefore important that you get to grips with the what, where and when of rubbish, to ensure that these areas are kept clean and tidy for everyone.

Read on for advice and guidance on waste services available in York.

The end of term

Yet another year has passed and it is the start of the summer holidays or for some of you the end of your time at York University and York St. John University.  Please remember a few common courtesies as you leave your accomodation.

  • Please remember to put your rubbish out no later than 7am on the day it is due to be collected or no earlier than 7pm on the day before collection.
  • Please do not leave your rubbish out early - if you are leaving before collection day - take your rubbish to Hazel Court household waste recycling centre - or ask a neighbour to help.
  • Please do not put extra waste out for collection, if your wheeled bin is full the refuse collectors will not collect any extra bags.  Take these extra bags to Hazel Court household waste recycling centre.
  • Please remember that if your area has only bags collected, please make sure that the rubbish is presented in bags and take extra to Hazel Court household waste recycling centre.
  • Please do not put out large items to be collected by the refuse collectors, they will not collect these.  You can arrange a bulky waste collection by calling York Customer Centre or take these items to Hazel Court household waste recycling centre.
  • Remeber that it is against the law to leave items and extra black bags in back alleys or outside the front of your house.
  • Remeber that people have to live in the streets that you are moving out of - be a good neighbour.
  • Remember do not have a rubbish end to your degree.

Freecycle at York St Johns University

If you are a student at York St johns University the student union is running a free 'Freecycle' project to help you dispose of unwanted items that can be reused.  To find out more information please email Joanne Piddington.  j.piddingto@yorksj.ac.uk or call (01904) 876360.

Rubbish collections

Most of the city has separate collections for rubbish, garden waste and recycling.

The frequency and type of collection depends on where you live.

Phone the Customer Contact Centre (01904) 551551 to learn about the arrangements for your street. For more information please see Household waste collections

Remember!

  • Put your bin or bags out for collection by 7am on the day of collection and no earlier than 7pm the day before.
  • In bag only areas, we cannot collect heavy or bulky items and all rubbish must be in bags.
  • In bin areas we cannot take side waste.

Our enforcement officers patrol the streets to check that these arrangements are being followed.  If you repeatedly ignore these rules, everyone living in your house could be issued with a fine.  See below for further information about the law.

Be a good neighbour

Ensure that your rubbish is stored tidily in your yard or garden until collection day.  Don't allow rubbish to accumulate as this can cause a nuisance.

If you live in a shared house with more than five tenants you could be eligible for a bin upgrade, click here to find out more, Request New Bin

End of term clear out

Don't have a rubbish end to your degree!

At the end of term, we know that students will be clearing out their accommodation ready to leave.  If you have a lot of rubbish to dispose of, click here for helpful information about how to dispose of unwanted items properly.

Don't load your vehicle with belongings your taking home until you have finished disposing of your rubbish - so if you plan to use a household waste recycling centre, remember to do this first!

You can visit any of the three centres in York.  If you have a vehicle that requires a permit, this can be waivered by producing your Student Union Card with photo ID.

Rubbish and the law

Incorrect storage and disposal of rubbish can lead to litter, pests ad spoils the environment for everyone.

City of York Councils enforcement team will take action against students who ignore refuse collection arrangements.  Officers monitor refuse presentation throughout the year.

Environmental crime is investigated under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.  Dumping rubbish is a crime, and liable to a £50,000 fine.

The authority can require every householder to follow the arrangements required to enable collection by the City of York Council refuse service.  Putting out your rubbish too early or not in the right way can result in a notice and £100 fixed penalty ticket.

Students and residents can also work with us to combat these problems by reporting anyone who commits these environmental crimes.  Please let us know if you suspect or witness a crime by contacting the Customer Contact Centre.

We don't want to see York's students falling foul of the law.  A criminal record could seriously jeopardise a students future career.

If you need more help contact York Customer Contact Centre by telephoning York 551551 or send your queries to the Customer Contact Centre.
