Recycling collection methods to be trialled in The Groves

As part of our commitment to making kerbside recycling collections available to all York residents, different types of collection containers will be tested out in The Groves area of the city in the autumn.

Different collection methods will be trialled to find the best way to collect recyclables from flats and terraced households not currently receiving the service.

Phase one - terraced households

In mid October we will provide recycling services to the terraced properties and flats within the area between Lowther Street and Lord Mayor's Walk.  All residents will be able to recycle cardboard, paper, plastic bottles, metal cans, tins, empty aerosols, glass bottles and jars.

Streets which are included are:

  • Fern Street
  • George Court, Groves Court
  • Lowther Street, Lockwood Street
  • Park Crescent, Penley's Grove Street
  • St John Crescent, St John Street
  • Waverley Street

When the collections start we will empty the recycling containers on alternate weeks to the refuse.  This means that one week we will collect the refuse and the following week we will empty the recycling containers.  We will be consulting with residents regarding the collection option for refuse and recycling.

Phase two - flats

Flats in the area between Lowther Street and Lord Mayor's Walk, will receive collections in late October 2008. We will provide these properties with shared recycling containers for collecting cardboard, paper, plastic bottles, metal cans, tins, empty aerosols, glass bottles and jars.

Flats which are included in phase 2:

  • Aberford House, Aldborough House, Ardsley House, Ayton House
  • Bedale House, Bempton House, Burneston House
  • Carnaby House, Castleton House, Coxwold House, Crathorne House, Cropton House
  • Helmsley House, Honley House, Horbury House
  • Kilburn house
  • Leyburn House
  • Munster House
  • Partington House, Pickering House
  • Rudston House
  • Selby House, Sinnington House
  • Thirsk House, Thornaby House
  • Willerby House.

When the collections start we will empty the recycling containers on alternate weeks to the refuse bins. This means that one week we will empty the refuse bins and the following week we will empty the recycling containers. If your property has a bin chute, these will be closed at this time to encourage recycling.

Phase three

The third phase of the trial won't get under way until spring 2009 and will see collections extended to every house in The Groves within the boundaries of the Guildhall ward.

Information anf feedback gathered from these three phrases will enable the council to come up with a plan for providing kerbside recycling collections to every house in the city.  The longer-term aim is for every household to receive a recycling collection by the end of 2010.
