Household waste collections

Most households in York now have an alternate week collection of rubbish and recycling. This means that:

  • We will collect your recycling one week
  • Rubbish that cannot be recycled will be collected the following week

Some households with gardens also have a collection of garden waste using a green wheeled bin. We will empty your garden waste bin in the same week as recycling.

When are collections?

To make things as easy as possible, your rubbish and recycling collections will take place on the same day each week – recycling and garden waste (where applicable) one week, rubbish the next week and so on.

Please contact us to find out your collection day and week. All households are provided with a new collection calendar each year.

Bank Holiday collections

In 2011 there will be no changes to household rubbish, garden waste and kerbside recycling collections in weeks containing a Bank Holiday, except Christmas and New Year. All collections will be on your normal day.

Christmas 2011 collections

We are not making any rubbish, garden waste or recycling collections during the week commencing 26 December 2011. Instead we will are making extra refuse collections during the week before and after Christmas. Kerbside recycling and garden waste collections will follow the normal timetable.

Collection leaflets with  a calendar for 2011/12 have now been delivered to all properties.  Please contact us if you need a leaflet.  Unfortunately we are unable to put the calendars and street list on the website.

Important Information

Due to a restriction in the availability of wheeled bins and recycling boxes we will not be able to accept requests for additional wheeled bins or recycling boxes/nets/lids until 1 April 2012.

We will continue to accept requests for replacement grey wheeled bins that have been lost or stolen. Noone will be left without a grey wheeled bin where appropriate.

If you need a replacement grey wheeled bin because your bin has been lost or stolen please contact us.

We are unable to accept requests for replacement recycling boxes/lids/nets or garden waste bins until 1 April 2012.

How much rubbish can I put out for collection?

One wheeled bin with the lid shut is emptied per property. No extra bags or boxes will be taken. For households with bag collections we will take 3 bags per property.

My bin wasn’t emptied today what can I do?

Check your bin did not contain items that made it too heavy to lift up onto the vehicle. If your bin did not contain anything heavy, and was put out to the edge of your property at or before 7am contact York Customer Centre and your problem will be solved as soon as possible.

If someone you know insists on putting out their waste into the street or alley early then action can be taken. You can also report this to your Street Environment officer.

Other types of waste

Clinical waste and medical waste

The council offers a free collection to householders who need to dispose of any clinical waste which arises from treatments at home, for example, sharps or yellow bagged waste.  The collections are usually arranged as a result of referral by a GP, hospital, health visitor, district nurse or home care assistant.

The council can help you to dispose of other non-hazardous medical waste, for example, dressing and packaging, which may not fit in your bin.
