Choose2Reuse summer fair - we need you!

The hugely successful Choose2Reuse campaign is back and hosting a summer extravaganza at York designer Outlet celebrating all things old, second hand, vintage and refurbished.

Choose2Reuse hates waste and believes in breathing new life in to our old things and we are on the look out for people that do just that.

Stall holders needed

If you have a talent and would be interested in having a stall at the Choose2Reuse fair then we want to hear from you.

There is no charge for stall holders and the event will be free to the public.  You can sell or demonstrate your products to the public.

Stalls at the Choose2Reuse Christmas fair in December 2011 included everything from retro cufflinks made from typewriter keys, exquisite rag rugs, rails of quirky vintage clothing, refurbished antique furniture and other crafts.  We are looking for a wide range of crafts, skills and tchniques to demonstrate how items can be reused and recycled.

Date & venue

Date: The fair will be held on Saturday 25 August 2012

Venue: York Designer Outlet, A19, York.  The fair will be in a marquee outside the South entrance

The bank holiday will be one of the busiest days of the year for the shopping centre and hopefully for us too

Compost giveaway dates

What better way to say thank you for composting your garden waste than to give it back to you free!

Here are the dates for this year's free compost give aways, in partnership with Yorwaste Ltd.  Compost will be available on:

  • Sunday 4 March
  • Sunday 1 April
  • Sunday 6 May
  • Sunday 3 June
  • Sunday 8 July
  • Sunday 5 August
  • Sunday 2 September
  • Sunday 7 October

Time: 9.30am until 2.30pm on these dates only

Location: Harewood Whin (Yorwaste’s Waste Management Site), Tinker Lane, off Wetherby Road, Rufforth, YO23 3RR.

There will be a limited quantity of compost available, so residents are advised to go earlier rather than later as it will go on a first come, first saved basis.

Important information - The compost is not bagged. You need to take a suitable bag or container to put the compost in. And a shovel!

Last year, in partnership with Yorwaste Ltd, we gave back around 2,320 of compost to York residents that had been made using the garden waste that we collect from the city’s green wheelie bins and Household Waste Recycling Centres.

One day only compost bin sales

Following the success of last year's sales we are offering 3 more opportunities to purchase compost bins for just £8 each (subsidised by the York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership).

Details of further sales in York, during 2012, will be announced soon.

When are the sales?

• Wednesday 30th May, Catterick Garrison Library, between 4pm and 7pm
• Wednesday 13th June, Selby Community Centre, Scott Road, Selby, between 4pm and 7pm
• Wednesday 27th June, Norton Library, between 4pm and 7pm

How do I get a compost bin?

Compost bins are available to residents in York and North Yorkshire and proof of address must be presented on the day.

Residents can either purchase bins on the day of a sale or pre-order and pay in advance.   We expect demand to be high and as stocks are limited we would recommend pre-ordering and paying in advance, to ensure availability.

The deadline for pre-ordering bins is 4pm on the dates below:
• Friday 25th May for Catterick one day sale
• Friday 8th June for Selby one day sale
• Friday 22nd June for Norton one day sale

To pre-order a compost bin, please contact Waste and Countryside Services on 01609 532512.

How many bins can I buy?

Residents will be able to purchase two compost bins at the subsidised price.  Bins must be collected on the day, with prices valid until the end of the sales. Residents unable to collect their compost bins at the one day sales will be automatically refunded the cost of the compost bin.

Reuse collections in your area

During Climate Week (in March) we held a successful reuse collection day, in partnership with British Heart Foundation.  This was for furniture, electrical items and other household wares (books, DVDsetc).

We hope to offer a number of  reuse collections at different locations throughout the year. We will update this page when details are confirmed.  Please let us know if you think residents in your area would be keen to donate items to a reuse collection.

Collections from British Heart Foundation are free and can be arranged by contacting them on 0844 334 1414, Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm or via the BHF website.
