York Rotters

York Rotters is a partnership between City of York Council and Friends of St Nicholas Fields, the project was set up in September 2004 and has been growing ever since!

York Rotters are a network of volunteer York residents who provide local, friendly advice and support both people who already home compost and those that want to start to home compost.

York Rotters are available for help and advice over the telephone, via email or will make visits to your home.  They are also available to hold stalls at events such as fetes or open days, come to an evening class or interest group to provide a talk or presentation.

Contact York Rotters if you would like them to come along to an event or give a talk, or you just need help with your compost bin.

Volunteering for York Rotters

Volunteers needed!

York Rotters is always looking for more volunteers to help spread the word about how easy composting is and why it is a great thing to do.

The success of York Rotters is down to the network of volunteer York residents.  The more volunteers the group has the more events they are able to attend and the more residents they are able to help with their home composting problems.

You don't need to be an expert gardener or composter (or even compost at home), as you will receive all the training that you will need and help and support from the York Rotters Project Officer and existing York Rotters.

York Rotters is a great way to learn more about home composting, gardening and the environment and to meet new friends along the way.

All we ask of a volunteer is that throughout the year they help to promote home composting, through activities that suit your own individual skills. Volunteering for York Rotters can take many forms, from attending roadshows, meetings, talking to different interest groups, to helping your neighbours, local school or helping out answering the York Rotters emails, telephone calls or help keeping the York Rotters display area looking good!

For more information on how to volunteer as a York Rotter or if you would like an informal chat about the type of activities that a York Rotter volunteer gets up to, contact the York Rotter Project Officer on (01904) 412861.

Training and events

York Rotters hold a number of training events throughout the year.  A 'How to Compost' for people to learn about home composting and also if people want to volunteer as a York Rotter there are training courses on 'How to be a Rotter'!  All training is held at York Environment Centre, Rawdon Avenue, York.

York Rotters are now running an additional course for anyone that it interested in finding ways to reduce your food waste and also how you can dispose of what's left on your plate!   The course involves lots of activities and there is plenty of opportunity to get involved and ask questions. For more information, the dates of the next course and who to contact please see our upcoming events section.
