You can do your bit to towards making York sustainable:
- buy locally produced items to help support local jobs
- join your local neighbourhood watch scheme
- use the local milkman, they reuse bottles and are out and about early
in the morning
- think before you get in the car. Can the journey be done by cycling or
walking?
- reduce the amount you buy (particularly packaging)
- reuse and mend what you have
- recycle
- take care what goes down the drain - nothing other than water so no to
paint, oil and other chemicals
- don't buy peat and peat based compost - better to make your own from
kitchen scraps in a wormery or compost bin
- improve your health through a healthy diet. Doctors recommend eating 5
portions of fruit and vegetables every day
- watch the television with your children, learning together is much more
fun
- try growing your own fruit and vegetable - garlic and herbs can be
grown in pots on windowsills, strawberries and potatoes can be grown in
tubs, radishes, lettuces and runner beans are easy in a garden
- insulate your home to reduce energy bills, condensation and damp
- use your local leisure facility
- find out the names of your neighbours if you don't already know
- use your local shops
- find out more about York's history by joining a local history group
If you are a business, community group or voluntary organisation you can
also do you bit for LA21.
