The Clean Air Act, 1993, introduced a wide range of new regulations including those which control smoke emissions and the height of chimneys
Industrial air pollution
We have various powers to deal with pollution arising from commercial and industrial sites. The Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999 requires the operators of specified processes to apply for and comply with a permit

Smoky vehicles
You can help tackle the problem of excessive smoke from commercial vehicles, such as a buses or lorries.
Smoke control areas
Certain areas of York have been designated smoke control areas. This means that all buildings in these areas must only use authorised fuels in any working fireplace unless the fireplace has been exempted.
Smoke free
A total ban on smoking in enclosed public places will come into force in England on the Sunday 1 July 2007
