Much of the day to day work of the planning office involves proposals to alter or enlarge dwellings. This guide is intended as a reference for householders, builders and developers intending to alter or extend residential buildings. It sets out the City of York Council's policy in dealing with household planning applications and reflects common issues and decisions. The aim is to provide a consistent approach to dealing with this type of application.
Whilst the document sets out guidance on how the Council will consider applications for extensions, it can only be a guide. There will be cases where the guidance does not cover the type of extension being proposed. In cases like this, the planning officer should be consulted before the application is submitted.
