York Design Awards 2009

The third York Design Awards evening was held on 13 July at York College, one of last year's winners.  Elly Fiorentini of BBC Radio York presented the evening and Simon Warren, Senior Lecturer in Architecture at Leeds Metropolitan University, was the guest speaker.

There were twenty-nine schemes for consideration by the four judges who spent two days visiting every one, submitted under three broad categories:

  • New build
  • Conservation / Reuse
  • Open space / Public realm

Some schemes were a combination of more than one but the categories are for guidance to applicants and are flexible.

Awards are given where a scheme reaches a very high standard of design or conservation so there can be more than one award in any one category.  The Lord Mayor's Award is given by the judges to a scheme they consider has something special about it.   This year it was given to De Grey Court, York St John University, for the special contribution the scheme made to the city.

  • De Grey Court, York St. John University

The judges considered the entries for 2009 were of a high standard and cumulatively higher than in 2008. This is very pleasing as a major objective of these awards is for aspirations to rise for design and quality of new build and conservation projects in the city.

In addition to the sponsors already mentioned, others were:  York College (venue), Dot Com Imaging (website); Fulprint (printing), City of York Council (the nine display boards), York Guild of Building and Blenkin & Co.

Sponsorship for 2010 is already being sought. Offers welcome!

The Display of all the 2009 schemes remains at York College until September, after which it will be on view at various venues around the city.
