In September 2006 Nestlé announced that they were going to redevelop the southern part of their site in York in order to raise enough capital to improve the main factory site and to commit to the city in the future.
We have been working with developers to take this forward and expect to achieve high standards of sustainable design and construction with innovative design whilst ensuring that the legacy and heritage of Rowntree is incorporated.
The scheme will aim to replace jobs lost as a result of closure of part of the site in 2006, provide a mix of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom houses and flats, including affordable housing, and bring other uses into the site which will help to create a community feel.
Meetings have been ongoing with the development team for Nestlé South to ensure that any new development provides the correct type and mix of housing, employment, leisure, local shops and public open space to help meet the needs of York, and that the development is well integrated with the surrounding communities.
A substantial amount of modelling for transport has been carried out in order to inform measures to deal with the expected increase in traffic.
On 14 September 2010 a planning application was submitted for the development of a mixed use scheme on the former Nestlé factory site. The development proposes a range of uses including offices, live-work units, community facilities, retail, cafe, housing and apartments including student accommodation, assisted living units and affordable housing.
