The council is responsible for the maintenance of certain closed churchyards in York. A parochial church council (PCC) can apply to close a churchyard when it becomes full for burials, and responsibiltiy for the following churchyards has been accepted by the council.

• St Andrewgate, Aldwark

• St Crux Church, The Pavement
• St Denys Church, Walmgate
• St Georges, Piccadilly / Walmgate
• St Giles Churchyard, Skelton
• St Margaret's, Burial Ground
• St Martins, Micklegate
• St Marys, Bishophill Junior
• St Marys Churchyard, Haxby
• St Michaels, Spurriergate
• St Maurices Churchyard, Jewbury
• St Olaves Churchyard, Marygate
• St Saviours Graveyard, Stonebow
