Managed by City of York Council in consultation with Freemen of the City.
Open access to part only. Informal paths.
The remnants of the historic Monk Stray are divided into four distinct
areas: The grassy parkland known as Heworth Stray, two areas of rough
grazing land to either side of the Malton Road, and the privately leased
golf course.
Heworth Stray was part of the ancient stray land for the Freemen of Monk
Ward. This is a pleasant, open area of mown grass with a variety of trees
giving welcome shade in the summer; a good place to kick a ball round or to
fly a kite.
Buses run frequently from the city centre to Monk Stray (Elm Park) or to Stockton Lane.
Unrestricted parking on most side streets in the area.
