York boasts a great variety of green spaces. There are formal parks and gardens, informal spaces such as ancient strays, commons, woods and river meadows.
The city has achieved five Green Flag Awards, the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales and the benchmark for excellence in recreational green areas.
