Choosing a council allotment garden

Most City of York allotment sites now have waiting lists. Contact the allotments administrator or allotments officer to check whether any sites in your area currently have vacancies. The allotments administrator will tell you the name and telephone number of the site secretary for your chosen site.

If there are vacant plots the site secretary will show you the plots available and help you to choose the one most suited to your needs. If there is a waiting list the site secretary will add your details to it and tell you how long you are likely to wait for a plot.

A traditional allotment is around 300 square yards in size. Keeping a plot this size in good condition takes quite a lot of hard work. Many tenants find a 'half plot' of 150 square yards more suitable and this is the size that is offered to new tenants on most of our sites.  If you are new to gardening or have limited time available, you may prefer to start with a quarter plot to see how you get on.

Cost

The rent for your plot will depend on its size. Allotment rents for 2008 range from £22.39 for the smallest plots up to £50.25 for the largest. A livestock charge is paid by tenants keeping livestock on their allotment garden. There are discounts on your rent and deposit if you're aged 60 or over, a student, disabled or unemployed.
