There are restrictions to the type of employment children can legally carry out. Prohibited employment includes:
- Any work which is more than 3 metres above floor level
- Any work in a commercial kitchen
- Working as an attendant or assistant in a fairground or amusement arcade, or in any premises used for the purpose of public entertainment by means of automatic machines, games of chance or skill or similar devices
- Selling or delivering alcohol: except in sealed containers
- Working in a cinema, theatre, discotheque, dance hall or night club (unless licensed to perform there)
- Collecting or sorting refuse
- Working in any slaughterhouse or other premises connected with the killing of livestock
- Working in or in connection with any racing course or track, or other place where any like sport is carried on, or as an assistant in any business conducted therein
- Any agricultural work involving heavy strain
- Working in the delivery or sale of fuel oils
- Working as an agent for the collection of money
- Employment at any machine prescribed as dangerous in an order made under section 19 of the Offices, Shops and Railways Premises Act 1963, or at any agricultural machine prescribed as dangerous in other relevant acts.
Employers of children working out of doors must ensure that the child has suitable work clothes and shoes for protection against bad weather.
No child can be employed for more than 4 hours continuously without a period of rest lasting at least 1 hour.
