Standing for elections

City of York Council elections are held on a four-year cycle. There are 22 wards with 47 seats. A full list of wards and seats per ward are as follows:

Who can be a candidate?

To be qualified to be elected as a member for the City of York Council a person must be:

  • 18 years of age or over at the date of their nomination, and
  • either a British Citizen, a Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Republic of Ireland or a citizen of another European Union State

and either:

  • be a local government elector for the City of York Council's area, or
  • have, during the whole of the twelve months before their nomination as candidate, occupied as owner or tenant any land or premises in the City of York Council's area, or
  • their principal or only place of work before the day of their nomination as a candidate has been in the City of York Council's area, or
  • during the whole of the twelve months before the day of their nomination as a candidate resided in the City of York Council's area.

There are certain people who are not eligible to stand for election:

  • Someone who holds a paid office under the local authority or a politically restricted post, as defined in Part I of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989
  • Someone who has been adjudged bankrupt
  • Someone who has been sentenced to a term of imprisonment (whether suspended or not) of not less than three months, without the option of a fine, during the five years preceding the election
  • Someone who has been disqualified under any enactment relating to corrupt or illegal practices
