Applying to vote by proxy

You can apply to vote by proxy if you are unable to go to your polling station on election day.

A proxy is someone who will go to the polling station and vote with your authority on your behalf. This is particularly an useful option if you are aboard during the elections and the timeframe for postal votes is not suitable.

It is good option for armed forces personnel who might be deployed overseas.

Your designated proxy will receive a letter in advance of the election day to remind them they are acting as your proxy. This letter has your polling station details and the proxy can take it along with them to vote.

You can apply for a proxy for a single election or as a long term arrangement. Unlike a postal vote, you must provide a reason on the application form. You must be registered to vote and can apply for a proxy vote if:

  • you are unable to go to the polling station for one particular election, for example if you are away on holiday
  • you have a physical condition that means you cannot go to the polling station on election day
  • your employment means that you cannot go to the polling station on election day
  • your attendance on an educational course means that you cannot go to the polling station on election day
  • you are a British citizen living overseas
  • you are a Crown servant or a member of Her Majesty's Armed Forces
