The referendum on the voting system used to elect MPs place across the UK held on Thursday 5 May 2011 asked:
"At present, the UK uses the ‘first past the post’ system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the ‘alternative vote’ system be used instead?"
In the City of York area the result was:
Yes 24,980 votes
No 41,137 votes
Total votes cast: 66,502 = 45.5% turnout
