Since 1987, York Against Cancer has funded services and facilities designed to improve the lives of people affected by cancer in York and the surrounding area. Their work focuses on three main areas which are cancer care; education and research.
In this time, attitudes to cancer have changed dramatically, and along with other healthcare professionals and charities, the phrase 'living with cancer' is now used by York Against Cancer. There are many new and innovative services which are intended to make living with cancer a little easier for both patients and their carers. These include specialist nurses, a psycho-oncology service and complementary therapies. A mini-bus service also transports patients to Leeds, where they receive radiotherapy treatments.
The education committee has funded a number of wide ranging projects aimed at increasing cancer awareness amongst different groups from the local community, and research projects are underway with York Hospital and the University of York.
All of these services are only possible thanks to the generosity of local people.

Brunswick Organic Nusery and craft workshop is a productive workplace for people with learning difficulties. It was set up over 16 years ago to provide purposeful work and training for people who are often excluded from having these chances. Brunswick is a place where people can develop skills and most importantly self-respect, confidence and independence. The nursery provides a varied range of supported work in horticulture, garden maintenance, hand-made crafts and woodwork.
Approximately 50 adults with learning difficulties attend Brunswick through referral from social services. As well as a team of paid staff, there is a loyal and supportive group of volunteers whose work is important to the sucess of the nursery. Student placements and volunteers from lcoal schools and colleges also attend, and local schools are encouraged to use the project as a resource for learning.
