Carer's assessment of need

A carer's assessment of need is an opportunity to talk about the things that could make it easier for you to care. It is also a chance to think about your needs and how you can be supported to have a 'life of your own', including things like employment, training and leisure.

It is not an assessment of your ability as a carer. No assumptions will be made as to whether you wish to continue to provide the amount and type of care that you have provided in the past.

The assessment will be as informal as possible. It will usually take place in your own home but can be in another convenient place if you prefer. You can have the assessment with, or separate from, the
person you care for.

Carers have a legal right to an assessment even if the person they care for refuses a community care assessment or services. Community Services must legally inform you about your right to an assessment and how this can help you.

A carer's assessment of need is free and confidential.
