Working with young people

If you work with, or would like to work with, young people you can get advice and support from the Youth Service.

Building hire

The Youth Service have a number of centres, mainly halls, around the city. These can be hired by anyone although youth organisations and voluntary groups receive discounted rates.

Training

We run training covering all aspects of working with young people including:

  • an introduction to youth work
  • NVQ in youth work
  • first aid
  • child protection
  • health and safety for educational visits
  • detached youth work skills
  • managing aggression

Training is usually free, although there is a nominal charge to voluntary or statutory agencies wishing to access the Youth Work NVQ.

Most training is based at the Kingswater Centre, Clifton Green Primary School, Kingsway North, York.

Equipment and resources

We can provide access to equipment and resources for working with young people, including camping equipment. Most equipment hire is free although we may ask for a deposit. A charge may be levied for larger items. Again there are discounted rates for youth organisations and voluntary groups.

Grants

The Youth Service can provide small grants to support work with young people.

You may also be eligible for financial support for voluntary organisations. Contact York Youth Service for more details.

Health and relationships

There is a programme about safe sex, positive relationships and parenthood delivered in youth clubs and other agencies around York.
