In York, about 20 young people are sentenced to custody each year. About five of these are sentenced to two or more years in custody.
Most young people who receive a custodial sentence will go to a Young Offenders’ Institute – HMYOI Wetherby for males and HMP & YOI New Hall for females.
Very rarely in York, a young person will be sent to a Secure Children’s Home.
York YOT maintain regular contact with young people in custody as well as their families and the secure estate. Somebody from the YOT will attend planning meetings and provide assessments for parole when necessary.
