The Stronger Families Programme (SFP) is an empowering, solution focussed group work based programme for parents of children aged 10-17 years old. The programme offers support to parents who are faced with the challenge of meeting their children's changing needs as they pass through the different development stages from childhood, teenage years and adolescence.
The content is non-threatening, family centred, and provides a framework for problem solving that parents can use to develop positive and co-operative relationships with their young people.
The main aim of the programme is to improve relationships between young people and their families. To help improve attendance at school, behaviour at both school and home and reduce the risk of young people engaging in offending behaviour. During the course of the programme facilitators work with families to achieve objectives such as responding effectively to challenging behaviour and helping parents to resolve identified issues of concern within the family.
By improving the parenting skills of parents / carers, these programmes are addressing one of the major risk factors associated with young people at risk of offending.
Feedback from the groups is very positive, with parents experiencing significant improvements in the way they handle difficult situations at home and an increased levels of confidence in how they parent their children.
