Scaled Approach

The Scaled Approach shapes a sentence at Court and what the YOT will do with a young person.  It centres around the individual needs and risks of re-offending of each young person.  The Scaled Approach is designed to help young people:

  • complete their order successfully
  • reduce their risk of re-offending
  • to change their outlook and behaviour

It also is designed to help the YOT:

  • ensure that the voice of victims is heard
  • work with families and the community to help promote positive changes in young people
  • protect the public through rigorous enforcement of sentences imposed by the Courts

There are National Standards that YOTs follow that form an important part of the Scaled Approach.  They set things like:

  • how often a young person is seen by the YOT
  • what happens if they don't do what is required of them.
