YOT Appropriate Adult - Role Description

  1. To attend the Police Station (Fulford Road, York) in the interests of young people aged 10 – 16 years who have been arrested and detained by the police between 9am and 10pm.
  2. To occasionally attend secure establishments where young people are being interviewed whilst on remand or serving a custodial sentence.
  3. To support, advise and assist the detained person, particularly while they are being questioned.
  4. To ensure the necessary steps have been taken to contact parents or carers to attend and to notify parents or carers of the outcome of the young persons interview.
  5. To check on the welfare of the young person detained, including whether he or she has been offered food and drink.
  6. To help the detained young person understand their rights, the police process and the reason for his or her detention.
  7. To attend the police interview and to intercede if it is not carried out fairly and properly according to the Police and Criminal Evidence Act.
  8. To facilitate communication between the detained young  person and the police.
  9. To liaise with the Youth Offending Team, duty managers and social services.
  10. To seek advice and guidance on any complicated cases or cases where a young person may be charged with a grave and serious crime.
  11. To maintain confidentiality, whilst having regard for child protection and issues of disclosure.
  12. To observe City of York Council and Youth Offending Team procedures during the course of all volunteering activities.
  13. To maintain a non-judgemental approach and follow anti-oppressive & anti-discriminatory practices.
  14. To maintain accurate written records and ensure completed AA forms and other paperwork is completed and sent to the Youth Offending Team or other parties in a timely manner.
  15. To regularly attend support group meetings and supervision.
  16. To attend and participate fully in any training and volunteer development sessions as required.
  17. To take responsibility for own health and safety and follow YOT guidelines to reduce risks to self and young people.

Youth Offending Team will provide:

  • Training and development for volunteers
  • Regular supervision and support from the volunteer coordinator
  • Out of pocket expenses
  • Information about changes to regulations or policy that affect volunteers
