Facilities and documents available at York Register Office

Recently restored to its former glory, York Register Office is a grade II Georgian listed building set a few hundred yards from the Minster. It boasts a traditionally styled marriage room (seating 50) which opens out into beautifully landscaped gardens.

Front entrance

The entrance to the Register Office is through two imposing pillars, which form an impressive front to this Grade 2 listed Georgian Building. As you look left from the steps you can see the world famous York Minster just 200 yards away.

Waiting Room

The marriage waiting room is a spacious area which looks out across the gardens, with the Bootham Suite situated to the left. It has an imposing fire place and will seat 50 people comfortably.

The Bootham Suite

The Bootham Suite is the centrepiece of the refurbished building, which was completed in 2004. It is a superb setting for a marriage ceremony, with tasteful décor and a traditional aisle. It is furnished to a very high standard, with a York stone floor and a state of the art sound system. The room opens out directly into the beautifully landscaped gardens.

Access and Facilities

Wheelchair users can access the building using an entrance with a ramp at the rear. This is a listed building owned by the Conservation Trust and a ramp could not be out at the front of the property. There are no more than four steps to the entrance at the front of the building.

The garden at the rear of the property where photographs are taken after the ceremony is fully wheelchair accessible.

There are adapted toilet facilities for disabled people, as well as standard toilets. Baby changing facilities are available.

Three of the four marriage rooms are on the ground floor. There is no lift because it is a listed building, however a stair lift is available.

There is a waiting room with seats for guests, and Reception also has seats for visitors.

Registered assistance dogs are welcome.

There are hearing loops installed at the reception desk and the main Bootham Suite (a mobile loop system can be brought to any other room in the building if requested).

Staff are trained to receive typetalk applications/messages over the telephone.

A member of staff trained to use British Sign Language is usually on duty.

Language Line is available and documents can be requested in Braille.

The reception desk is set at a low level with bright lighting.

There is no parking available to guests or visitors. Bootham car park and Marygate car park are closest to the Register Office.

More detailed information about accessibility, including photographs, is available from the Disabled Go Access Guide for York Register Office.

The gardens

The gardens are the perfect setting for the pictures of your special day. From a large hard standing area you can make your way down via the stepping stones, to various photo opportunities on the lawns. There is also a large rockery which forms a perfect backdrop for your pictures.
