Renewing your marriage vows

A married couple, of any age and married for any length of time can arrange a Renewal of Marriage Vows Ceremony.

Contact us for further information or to arrange a ceremony.

What is the ceremony like?

The ceremony is put together by you! Just as no two marriages are the same, no two ceremonies will ever be the same. Our staff can guide you through the options available to you.

A ceremony may include sections such as:

  • Introduction and welcome
  • Acknowledgement of children
  • Readings
  • Renewal of vows
  • Rededication/giving of ring(s)
  • Speech or reading from a special guest
  • Signing of the certificate
  • Closing words

How long does the ceremony last?

Normally between 15 and 30 minutes.

Where and when can the ceremony take place?

The marriage room at the York Register Office on a Sunday. Every hour, on the hour, are the usual times.

You can also renew your vows at any other approved venue or a building with a public entertainments licence.

Do we have to be York residents?

No.

How much does it cost?

  • £160.00 at the Register Office
  • £185.00 at approved premises

Make cheques or postal orders payable to 'City of York Council'.

Can another couple renew their marriage vows at the same ceremony?

No. Other family or friends can hold their own unique ceremony at the same venue on the same day, but not at the same time.

I have been married before, can I still have a ceremony?

Yes, as long as you are now legally married.

Can we organise a ceremony at short notice?

Yes. There is no statutory time limit between booking the ceremony and the actual event.

Are there any legal implications?

These ceremonies are not legally binding in any way. They are for couples who wish to renew their marriage vows in a unique and personal ceremony.

You must, however, produce your marriage certificate when booking your ceremony.
