This page tells you how to get copies of certificates for births, marriages and deaths that took place in York only.
The Superintendent Registrar is responsible for the safe custody of all the deposited registers of births, deaths and marriages completed in York since 1 July 1837. (This is when official records of births, deaths and marriages in England and Wales began).

Post the completed form, with payment (details below), to York Register Office, 56 Bootham, York, YO30 7DA.
You can order your certificate by phone and pay by credit or debit card.
You can also apply in person at the Register Office.
If you apply by post please include a postal order for the appropriate fee. Make postal orders payable to 'City of York Council'. The cost of the certificate is dependent on the speed of service you would like.
General search in indexes (please ask for details) : £18.00
If you wish us to send your certificate by first class post the same day that we receive your application, then the fee is £12.
If you wish us to send your certificate by guaranteed next day delivery and apply before 3pm, then the fee is £22.
If you apply by post and pay £7 we will send your copy certificate out within 10 working days by second class post.
If you wish to call back later the same day or you wish us to post the
certificate to you the same day by first class post the fee is
£12.
If you apply in person at the Register Office we will supply your
certificate as soon as possible (usually within one hour of submitting your
application) on payment of £15.
If you apply before 3pm and wish us to post the certificate to you by
guaranteed next day delivery the fee is £22.
If you wish us to issue the certificate within 10 working days and post it
to you by second class post, the fee is £7.
You need the date and place where the birth, death or marriage occurred, and the name(s) of the person(s) involved. The more information you have the easier it is for the Superintendent Registrar to find the correct entry in the Register.

Events recorded before 1 July 1837 may have been recorded in Church baptismal, marriage and burial registers that may be in the custody of the local archivist, The Borthwick Institute, St Anthony's Hall, Peasholme Green, York, YO10 2PW .
