Contact us If you have complaints about any of the following:
Dirty food premises or unsafe food
Food businesses should be clean and the food safe to eat and free from
foreign bodies.
Food quality or descriptions
Food should be accurately described and of suitable quality. It is an
offence to mislead you about the food you buy either on a label, a menu or
a picture advertising it and to make claims that are not true such as
'organic' and 'vegetarian'.
Out of date food
The only legally recognised date codes are 'Use by' and 'Best before'.
-
Use by is the date by which food must be consumed to
ensure it is still safe to eat. It is ILLEGAL to sell food beyond this
date. Sale on the day of expiry is acceptable.
-
Best before is the date after which food may begin to
deteriorate in quality. It is NOT an offence to sell food after this
date as long as the food is still of good quality
-
Display until and Sell by are used by
retailers to help them with their stock rotation. These dates are not
legally recognised and it is not an offence to sell food after them.
The food will normally have either a use by or a best before date for
customer use.
