How to become a market trader

Casual traders

The following rules explain how to become a casual trader at Newgate Market:

'Permanent' (licensed) traders have till 8am to occupy their stalls.  'casual trader stalls' are then let between 8am and 9am.

On busy days it is advised that casual traders park on the fringes of the market area as parking spaces can be limited.  Once allocated you may bring your vehicle closer to the loading/unloading areas.

Casual traders must report to the Market Office, 2 Newgate, by 8am on the day they intend to stand. A short registration form needs fulfilling prior to standing. You can download the casual trader form on the right hand side of this page.

Vacant stalls, if any, are allocated at about 8.30 to 9am, based on list position and goods sold.

Allocating stalls

A daily 'points system' is operated, based on attendance, to formulate each day's seniority list.

Normally, stalls are allocated on that seniority basis, however the Market Manager may exercise discretion in order to avoid a clash of trade or maintain balance and variety within the market. Please note, some lines may be limited or restricted altogether (for example clothing, fruit and vegetables, cards).

Unless agreed otherwise by the Market Manager the due payment is to be made before setting up. Midweek stall prices range from £12.25 to £24, depending on stall position and market day. Sunday fees start at £12.25 per stall.

Insurance

It is a condition of standing at Newgate Market that you are in possession of Third Party Public Liability Insurance to the value of £2,000,000 (membership of the National Market Traders' Federation and CMTIA is acceptable in this respect).

Selling second-hand goods

It is a requirement of the North Yorkshire County Council Act for anyone who deals in second-hand goods to be registered with the local Trading Standards Office. For further information please speak to the Market Office direct on (01904 551355 or The Trading Standards Office direct on (01904) 551562.

Parking

Parking is available for market traders. Two areas within a short distance from the market are set aside for the market vehicles.  Parking fees are £1.60 per day for vans; £2 per day for cars.  Details and location of the car parking areas will be given on your first day.

York City Centre, including the Market area, is pedestrianised (ie no vehicles) from 11am until 4pm Monday to Friday, 10.30am until 4.30pm Saturday and 12 noon until 4pm Sunday. See York city centre pedestrian area.
