The council issues private hire and hackney carriage driver and vehicle licences.

Hackney carriage vehicle licence

This licence is for taxis that are available at taxi ranks or can be hailed in the street. The driver must also hold a hackney carriage taxi driver's licence. All the 158 hackney carriage vehicle licences available in York are currently allocated.

Private hire vehicle licence

This licence is for vehicles that are booked in advance by telephone or at a booking office. The driver must also hold a private hire driver's licence. The council cannot limit the number of private hire vehicle licences but all vehicle licence holders must work for a company with an operator's licence issued by the council or must hold an operator's licence themselves.
