Step 1

Complete the relevant licence application form. Driver's and vehicle licences are applied for on the same form. People usually apply for them at the same time.

Step 2

All applicants are required to complete and pass the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) private hire and hackney carriage driving assessment before submitting an application form to Council's taxi licensing department. The DSA pass certificate and driver's licence application form must be submitted together. Applications will not be accepted without the DSA pass certificate. Step 3

Arrange an appointment with taxi licensing on tel: (01904) 551438 to hand in the forms. You must take your driving licence (photocopies will not be accepted), and two recent passport photos. At this appointment you will be required to complete a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosure form and provide identity documents. We will advise you which identity documents are acceptable. A fee of £26.00 in cash for the disclosure must be paid at this appointment.

Step 4

Applications normally take between six to eight weeks to process, depending on the time taken by the CRB. You will be required to pass a written knowledge test on the city of York. There is a fee of £15 per knowledge test. We will contact you about when and where to sit it.
