If you want to place any tables, chairs or parasols on any part of the highway you need planning permission and a licence from the council. A highway incudes not only roads but also footways and verges.
Are there any rules?
Planning permission must be granted before a licence can be given - contact the planning processing unit for more information. Please note, the Highway Licence is separate to the planning process and the granting of planning permission does not automatically guarantee that Highway Permission will be given.
Public liability insurance to £5m is required
Please read the Standard Conditions before making your application for a Highway Licence.
Please refer to the guidance notes for help in completing your application form.
Cost
The cost for a highway licence is £550 for one year.
Apply for permission
Once planning permission is obtained you will need to complete the application form and send it to St Leonard's Place with your payment.
It will take eight to ten weeks to be granted permission so make sure you apply in plenty of time.
