Objecting to a licence application

Residents and businesses in the vicinity of premises applying for the grant or variation of a premises licence or club premises certificate can make representations (objections) about the application.

Representations must relate to one or more of the four objectives of the Act:

  • prevention of crime and disorder
  • public safety
  • prevention of public nuisance
  • protection of children from harm.

Representations must be made in writing and sent to the address on the right hand side of this page.

Representations must be received before the "last date for representations", shown on:

  • a notice displayed on the premises
  • a public notice in the local press
  • the licensing register.

What happens next?

When representations are received a hearing will be held to determine the outcome of application. You will be invited to attend the hearing to verbally support your views. Hearings are held on council premises during the day and are attended by three elected members of the council.

You may choose to be supported at the hearing by a representative who may be your local ward councillor, MP, legal representative or anyone who will speak on your behalf.
