If there is a major flood in York the council will support the emergency services. We do this for all major emergencies.
The Environment Agency gives flood warnings for rivers and coasts. You can see all the current flood warnings on the Environment Agency's current flooding information page. The council is not responsible for the content or reliability of external websites.
You can find out how to protect your home on the Environment Agency flooding website.
If you live in a flood-risk area you can get warnings sent direct to you by phone, text message or e-mail. To find out more tel: 0845 988 1188 (Environment Agency's Floodline).
The council only gives out sandbags to private properties if we have enough sandbags and people to distribute them. It is very important that we make sure we have enough sandbags to protect key buildings, for example hospitals. However, we do try to prevent widespread flooding in all areas. You can download our sandbag policy.
If we are going to give out sandbags we will we will let you know by phone or by advertising locally. Sandbags will not be available for public collection from the Foss Island Depot. There is no charge for sandbags but we may restrict the number you can have.
