Trading standards

The Trading Standards team helps businesses to comply with the law through advice and inspection of premises.

We conduct investigations into potential breaches of the law.

In this section:

  • Advice to business
    All businesses, regardless of size, are subject to a wide range of legislation, enforced by Trading Standards
  • Advice to consumers
    Information and advice on your 'consumer rights' is now provided by Consumer Direct Yorkshire and the Humber
  • Animal welfare
    Enforcing laws regarding the health and welfare of non domestic animals, the control of dogs and animal licences
  • Fair trading
    Motor Traders' Fair Trading Scheme and Home Services Directory
  • Product safety
    Trading Standards are responsible for ensuring that goods offered for sale are safe
  • Weights and measures
    Trading Standards are responsible for providing advice and enforcing the laws on the weighing and measuring of goods
  • Annual report
    In this report we summarise the work and achievements of the teams that deliver these services and report the results of how satisfied our customers were with our work
