We encourage you to pay by Direct Debit. You can choose to pay your bill in:
Most people pay ten instalments and your bill will show ten payments unless you contact council tax to arrange otherwise.
You have a choice of payment dates for Direct Debits. You can pay on the 1st or 15th of the month.
If instalments are not paid by the due date you may have to pay the full amount in one instalment.
To pay by Direct Debit contact the council tax department or download and complete the application form.
You can pay over the phone using your Debit Card by contacting the council tax department, tel: 01904 551558 or online using City of York Council online payments.
Alternatively, you can call our automated payment line, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, tel: 01904 551557. You will need your payment reference number (located on your bill) to use this service.
You can pay your council tax bill by Cheque or Postal Order through the post. Make cheques and postal orders payable to: "City of York Council", include your payment reference ( printed on your bill ) with any payment you make.

We are gradually replacing allpay cards with barcoded bills. New and replacement allpay cards will no longer be issued, but those customers who have a card will be able to use it for the time being. We intend to phase these out next year.
PayPoint is a free and simple way to pay your bill in cash. If you request to pay in this way we will send you a specially barcoded bill. You can pay by debit card, cheque or cash at any Post Office, or by cash at any shop or garage in the UK that displays the 'PayPoint' sign, providing you take the barcoded part of your bill along with you.
