Council tax discounts and exemptions

If you are on a low income or unemployed you may qualify for a reduction in your bill. You can apply for council tax benefit if you own your own home. If you are a tenant, a claim for housing benefit will automatically count as a claim for council tax benefit.

  • Exempt properties
    Some properties are exempt from paying council tax
  • People with disabilities
    You may be entitled to a reduced council tax bill if you, or someone who lives with you, need a room, an extra bathroom, a kitchen, or extra space in your property to meet special needs arising from a disability
  • Second adult rebate
    Second adult rebate is money from the council to help you pay your council tax. It is an alternative rebate to main council tax benefit for people who only get a small amount of main benefit or who do not qualify for main council tax benefit at all
  • Second homes
    If your property is a second home and not your usual home you may qualify for a discount of 10%
  • Single occupancy discount
    The full council tax for a property assumes two adults are resident. If you live alone you may qualify for a 25% discount
  • Student exemptions and discounts
    Apply online for a student council tax exemption or discount
