City Of York Council

York800 - 800 Years of the City of York

Changes to HB for private tenants aged 25 to 34 from 1st January 2012

The Government is changing the way HB is worked out for single people aged 25 to 34 who are:

  • single
  • have no dependants
  • are aged 25 - 34 and
  • live in a self contained property which is privately rented and
  • do not fall into a 'protected category'

From 1st January 2012 single people aged from 25 to 34 will only be entitled to the lower 'shared accommodation rate'.

There are some exceptions if you:

  • get the severe disability premium in your benefit because you are entitled to the middle or higher rate care component of DLA; or
  • need an extra bedroom for a carer who provides you with overnight care you need but doesn't normally live with you; or
  • have spent at least 3 months in a homeless hostel and accepted support services to enable you to be rehabilitated / resettled in the community; or
  • are managed under active multi-agency management under the Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA).
